Lightning May Have Started House Fire

Egg Harbor Township - The lightning that struck the region may have started a fire that damaged a home in the Bargaintown section of the township Monday morning.

An emergency call came in at about 11:45 a.m. about a house in the 1300 block of Old Zion Road. Bargaintown Fire Chief Tom Nace said 30 firefighters from the Bargaintown, Scullville and Somers Point volunteer fire companies responded to the scene and took 10 minutes to put out the blaze....Continue Reading

"It was quite extensive," Nace said of the damage. "The left side of the house is burned. The rest is heat and smoke damage."

 Nace said some family members were home when the fire began and they believe lightning might have caused it. Nace said the case is still under investigation but the blaze is considered accidental.

No one was hurt during the fire. The family was able to escape with their dogs, but Nace said he was unsure about the condition of their chinchilla and parrot. Nace said the family plans to stay with relatives.
