The truck was heading east at about 9:15 p.m. when it left the road for unknown reasons at milemarker 19 and veered into the woods, according to State Police, Expressway Station. Both the driver and passenger were trapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated.
A witness driving behind the truck reported not seeing the brake lights, just that the vehicle went off the side of the road and into the trees, Sgt. First Class Michael Kaiser said.
The male driver, whose name was not released, was airlifted to the Trauma Unit at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus, and the female passenger was taken to ARMC by ambulance, Kaiser said. Their conditions were not immediately known.
The eastbound lanes of the expressway were closed for about 15 minutes to allow the helicopter to land on the highway, police said.
Two eastbound lanes were still blocked off as troopers investigated and cleared the scene. The demolished truck was in the wooded median, facing west.

Police seek expressway crash witnesses
State Police identified a Camden County couple injured in a one-car crash Monday night on the Atlantic City Expressway. Now, they are hoping to find witnesses.
Emory Daniels, 44, of Lindenwold, was driving east on the expressway at about 9:15 p.m. when his pickup truck left the road at mile marker 19 and veered into the woods. Police are still investigating the reason the truck left the road.
Daniels was seriously injured, suffering severe lacerations, and fracturing his pelvis and fibula, Sgt. First Class Michael Kaiser said. His passenger, Beth Allen, 44, of Blackwood, had minor injuries, Kaiser said.
Both remained in the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus, on Tuesday.
Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call the State Police expressway barracks at 965-7200.
