A neighbor later alerted the family that the porch was ablaze, and the man tried unsuccessfully to extinguish the flames, Dube said.
The man and woman who lived in the house were relocated. They received hotel vouchers good for three days and a credit card to purchase clothing and food, said Donnalynn Warren, emergency services director for the local chapter of the American Red Cross. Their dog is staying with a veterinarian, Warren said. Dube said the homeowner had insurance, which should help.
Alisha Kosden, who lives next door and witnessed the fire, said she was glad her neighbors were able to escape.
"It's such a shame, a tragedy," Kosden said Friday afternoon. "It makes me very upset. But I was thankful no one got hurt because you can replace a house, not people."
The emergency call came in about 4:16 p.m., and it took less than 30 minutes to extinguish the flames, Dube said. About 35 firefighters battled the blaze, including volunteers from the Scullville, Cardiff, West Atlantic City and Farmington fire companies, all from Egg Harbor Township.
