Auctioning Vehicles Online Pays off for Mullica
The auction, held on www.govdeals.com during the past few weeks, put a 2003 Buick Century, 2001 Ford Crown Victoria, 1993 Ford backhoe, 1992 Ford F150 and 1988 Chevy pickup out for bid.....Continue Reading
The items collectively sold for $18,793.59, Committeewoman Kathy Chasey said, with 7 percent of that going toward auction fees.
"We plan to set up a PayPal account so that 7 percent is paid directly by who purchases the items," Chasey said.
The backhoe drew the highest bid, of $12,526, followed by $3,630 for the Buick Century.
The Crown Victoria sold for $1,510, the Chevy pickup went for $805 and the F150 sold for just $322.59.
Township Clerk Kim Johnson called the sale prices good, considering the latter two vehicles would not run without a jump-start.
"I ran the auctions when they were handled through the township, and we'd only get $50 for a vehicle, because there weren't that many bids," Johnson said. "This was a much, much better result."
Mayor Janet Forman said the revenue generated by the auction will be split between the general fund and the Police Department's confiscatory fund.
The township used to organize its own auctions, Chasey said, but poor turnout forced the township to start partnering with the county on auctions.
"The auctions with the county always worked well, but we just wanted to see if this would work out any better. And it did," Chasey said of the larger market the Internet provided.
A 2003 Dodge Intrepid also was up for auction, but the bidder defaulted. Chasey said it will be auctioned again beginning Feb. 25.
