Only four units at the Bay Meadows complex were actually occupied at the time of the fire, Denan said, and the most heavily damaged of all the units, No. 208, was unoccupied. The heavy fire damage to that unit is estimated at upwards of $200,000, Denan said.
The occupied unit that sustained the most damage was unit 204, which sustained an unspecified amount of smoke and water damage. Its residents were not at home at the time of the fire, Denan said. The damage to other units consisted of some minor smoke damage, Denan said, and all occupants have found places to stay during the cleanup.
The fire at the Somers Point-Mays Landing Road complex began at about 5:50 p.m. Tuesday and was brought under control by 7:30 p.m. with the help of five fire companies from Somers Point, Northfield and Egg Harbor Township.
