VENTNOR - A basement blaze turned into a two-alarm fire and partially destroyed a multi-story building Sunday evening on Nashville Avenue.
Firefighters responded to a report of smoke coming from a duplex at 4 S. Nashville Ave. at 7:27 p.m. Upon arrival, they found a fire in the basement that quickly escalated to a two-alarm blaze with flames spreading to the first and second floors, Chief Bert Sabo said.
Firefighters got the blaze under control in about an hour, despite having to wait briefly for an electric crew to arrive and cut power to the building, Sabo said.
No humans were injured, but a resident living in the second-floor apartment building lost several pets in the fire, said Sabo, adding that the building suffered extensive smoke damage and will not be habitable for some time.
The Margate City Fire Department also responded to the fire.
Officials were still investigating the cause of the fire late Sunday night.

Investigation of Sunday fire continues
City fire investigators still have not determined what caused a fire Sunday night in a Nashville Avenue duplex, fire Chief Bert Sabo said Monday.
Five pets - four birds and a puppy that lived in the owner's home, in the upper floors of the duplex - died in what the chief described as a "pretty hot, smoky fire." The two-alarm blaze apparently started in an apartment in the basement of the building at 4 S. Nashville Ave.
No people were hurt in the fire. Ventnor firefighters found a fire in the downstairs apartment after getting a report of smoke coming from the duplex shortly before 7:30 p.m. Sunday, and the fire spread quickly into the upper floors. Ventnor's Fire Department got help from Margate's in fighting the fire.
