Bargaintown Fire Kills Family Dog

The owners escaped when their house on Delaware Avenue caught fire Monday afternoon, but the family dog perished, Assistant Chief Bob Dube of the Bargaintown Fire Company said.
The fire was determined to be accidental and apparently started at about 4:15 p.m. when a block in the fireplace cracked and flames went through the wall into the garage, Dube said. The damage has not yet been determined, but the home is not habitable.

Dube said he arrived on the scene in the 400 block of Delaware Avenue to see the building involved in flames. About 30 firefighters from the Bargaintown and Scullville companies responded to battle the fire, which was quickly put under control. The fire burned through power lines leading from the garage to the street, leaving live wires on the ground, Dube said. Extra precautions had to be taken to ensure firefighters' safety.
Firefighters went inside to search for the dog, and found it dead, Dube said.
Neighbor Dennis Walsh said the owners were sitting down to dinner when the smoke detectors went off.
"I just tried to run over and see if there was anything I could do, but it was too late," Walsh said.
From the outside, two burned vehicles could be seen in the gutted garage. Some of the exterior siding had melted in the heat. Delaware Avenue was closed to traffic from Leap Street to Woodberry Court while firefighters continued to search for hot spots in the home.
