A 3-year-old girl was in critical condition Monday night after she was struck by a car on 13th Street, police said.
The child's father went outside to get the mail from a box across the street at about 4:55 p.m. Monday, and the girl followed without his knowledge, said investigating Sgt. Sam Mavilla.
The girl, whose name was not released, ran in front of a car driving south on 13th Street, and was hit by the car, Mavilla said. The driver, whose name was also not released, is a 43-year-old local woman.
The child was airlifted to the pediatric trauma unit of Cooper University Hospital in Camden, and remained in critical condition Monday night, Mavilla said. No charges have been filed against the driver, Mavilla said. "It's an unfortunate, horrible accident," he said.
The Hammonton Rescue Squad responded to the scene and the Hammonton Fire company assisted with traffic control, police said.
