Driver/engineer Edwin Adams, who was taken to Imperial Medical Center, suffered minor injuries in the incident in the 300 block of Southeast 9th Avenue, spokeswoman Sandra King said.

Nobody else was injured in the fire, which started in a one-story quadruplex about 10:50 a.m., but four families were left looking for a place to live.

Investigators believe the fire was possibly caused by clothes around a water heater, King said.

Residents inside quickly left the building as firefighters arrived.

After the fire hydrant blew, water gushed 10 feet into the air, King said.

Through the mess, firefighters forced their way into the building, and into the cluttered apartment where the fire started.

Smoke, water and fire damage rendered all four units uninhabitable.

In all, six adults and four children are without a home.

King did not know what arrangements the families have for temporary shelter.
