ATLANTIC CITY
A two-alarm fire damaged a house on North Delancy Place on Wednesday evening and displaced an unknown number of people, but there were no injuries, Fire Chief Dennis Brooks said.
The fire in the three-story, wood-frame house started in the basement kitchen at about 6:30 p.m., and all occupants had escaped by time firefighters arrived, Brooks said.
"We had fire in the kitchen and all the way up to the roof," Brooks said.

The house, built around the 1920s, had open wall spaces from the basement to the roof, allowing the fire to spread, Brooks said. Firefighters had to pull out ceilings and walls to get at the flames.
About 30 firefighters in four engines and two ladder trucks responded, Brooks said. A second alarm was called because the house was occupied and the neighboring buildings are about 5 feet away. Engine 6 and Ladder 3, the first teams on the scene, did a good job of limiting the damage, Brooks said. Battalion Chief Mike Dixon was the commander at the scene.
"When the first crews get there right away and make an aggressive attack," it controls the amount of damage the fire can cause, Brooks said.
Brooks estimated the damage at $50,000 to $60,000. There was significant damage to the basement kitchen and some smoke and fire damage on the second and third floors.
The home was supposed to be a single-family dwelling, but officials are looking into who was living there, Brooks said. Code Enforcement will investigate the building and its occupants.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but the origin is not believed to be suspicious, Brooks said.
