One man suffered minor injuries in a Friday-morning fire that hit the bedroom of a Harbor Beach Boulevard townhouse, a fire official said.

The fire was reported at 9 a.m. and firefighters had it out nine minutes later, Lt. Steve Frei said. But the townhouse tenant - who had just moved into the home Thursday - burned his hands when he tried to put the blaze out himself with a fire extinguisher, according to Frei.

The unidentified tenant didn't immediately call 911 after he discovered the fire, which allowed it to grow initially, but Frei says the man did the right thing by then closing the door of the burning bedroom. That move kept it from spreading further and allowed the Fire Department to make "a quick knockdown" once they were called, the firefighter added.

The home, in the 4600 block of Harbor Beach Boulevard, has about $75,000 worth of damage, mostly from smoke, Friel estimated. Investigators were trying later Friday to determine what caused the blaze
