ATLANTIC CITY - Victor Francesco was surprised by the call 10 years ago.
His middle son, Michael, said he was going to take the test to become a firefighter, just like his father.

He's my challenge child," said Deputy Fire Chief Francesco, a 31-year veteran of the department. "I never thought he'd have the perseverance or the stamina that it takes to go through the rigors of the test."

But, at 18, Michael moved to the city and took the test, finishing near the top of those taking the entrance exam. On Thursday - after 10 years as a city firefighter - Michael Francesco became Fire Capt. Michael Francesco.

The elder Francesco said it was like going back to 1981, when he was sworn in as a captain and his three sons stood by him as he took the oath.

Michael Francesco was one of five firefighters promoted to captain Thursday afternoon. Joining him were Samuel Flamma, James Fisher, Douglas Owen and Joshua Crowley.
The promotions became official March 1, but Thursday allowed a celebration for those who obtained this goal.

But before he could celebrate with his men, Fire Chief Dennis Brooks had to take care of city business, submitting a reduced budget to the administration. The cuts include seven layoffs, but would not affect the promotions, Brooks said.

The looming budget did not seem to mar the day for those in attendance. Mayor Scott Evans - on leave from his firefighting job - happily administered the oath of office to the five new captains.

For Deputy Fire Chief Francesco it meant something a little more.

"It's probably one of the few jobs where your son is also your brother," he said. "I don't think there's any better compliment than to have a family member follow in your footsteps."

His youngest son, Ricky, is also looking to join the brotherhood. He is taking the exam for the Margate City Fire Department.
