House Fire Displaces Couple in Somers Point

Fire-Rescue NewsFrom the Atlantic City press Published: Sunday, March 23, 2008

SOMERS POINT - An electrical fire displaced a local couple early Saturday morning.

The woman woke up at about 1:30 a.m. to find that a bedroom in the one-story home was on fire, Fire Chief Frank Denan said. He did not have the couple's name.

"Upon arrival, there were flames visible out of two windows," Denan said. "They believe it was caused by a heater. After further investigation, it appears to be electrical at this time."

When the husband was awakened, he walked toward the room that was on fire and his hair was singed, Denan said. The man was taken to Shore Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released.

The fire gutted the bedroom and caused extensive smoke damage to the rest of the floor, Denan said. The basement had water damage.
It took firefighters about 20 minutes to get the fire under control, he said.

The home is not inhabitable. The couple was put up in a local motel with the help of the citys Emergency Management department, Denan said.
