HAMMONTON -- A fire broke out Monday morning in a second floor storage area at the Hammonton ShopRite, forcing the evacuation of approximately 20 employees, Hammonton Fire Chief Michael Ruberton said Tuesday.

No one was injured in the blaze, which broke out around 7:15 a.m., but it forced the store to close for the remainder of the day. It reopened at 11 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Ruberton said the store's sprinkler system properly activated in the storage area near the rear of the store. The blaze damaged store supplies and also a control wiring system, which also was housed in the second-floor area, he said.
Firefighters extended approximately 200 feet of hose to get water to the blaze, Ruberton said. Some of the store area near the blaze sustained water damage, but Ruberton added it "wasn't too bad." Store manager Dave Roesch said no customers were in the store at the time, as the store was scheduled to open at 8 a.m.
"We're very thankful for the efforts of the firefighters and our electrical contractors, Palmieri Electric," Roesch said. "We're open and ready for business."
When firefighters arrived, the store already had been evacuated.
"The alarm went off, and everyone got out," Roesch said.
Yellow emergency tape was draped across the store's two front entrances Monday afternoon with a handwritten note saying the store was closed due to the fire. In addition to both Hammonton fire companies, fire units from Elm, Elwood, Nesco and Indian Mills also responded to the scene, Ruberton said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by Hammonton Police Fire Investigator Jared Baglivo.
