Walter Fagan, a married father of four and a 10-year volunteer of East Greenwich Fire and Rescue's Mount Royal Fire Company, fell ill on his crew's truck.

Chief Nelson Wiest said the report of a fire came in to the station at 11:57 p.m. but was determined to be a false alarm.

"It's a big loss to the department," he said.

"We're going to do what we can to move on in his memory."

When he fell ill, Fagan's crew stopped the truck and nearby emergency medical personnel treated him.

Fagan, who was self-employed, was taken to Underwood-Memorial Hospital in Woodbury, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

An autopsy, conducted Saturday, indicated Fagan suffered a heart attack, Wiest said.

Fagan's funeral will be held at McBride-Foley Funeral Home in Paulsboro at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 4.

Wiest said it would be a full line-of-duty ceremony.

Black bunting hung on the station Saturday.
