About 100 firefighters from throughout Atlantic County battled a fire at a tire junkyard yesterday that emitted high flames and plumes of thick, black smoke, authorities said.

The blaze was reported about 8:50 P.M. Saturday (Dec 6th) at the Perona Brothers tire yard, and burned on into yesterday, according to a dispatcher for the Mullica Township police, Patty Wilson.

The police in the rural township said that the fire was declared contained early yesterday morning, and that firefighters were letting it burn out. No injuires were reported. Earlier, there was concern that toxic smoke from the blaze might force evacuations from homes near the junkyard, where huge piles of tires have been discarded.
