MULLICA TOWNSHIP - A Maryland woman was seriously injured Tuesday night when her vehicle veered off Route 30 and struck several trees, police said.
Trina Cunningham, 48, was driving west in the left lane on the White Horse Pike at a high rate of speed at 8:14 p.m., when she apparently slammed on her brakes to avoid hitting a car in front of her, said investigating Officer Erik Carricarte. The driver turned her steering wheel to the right, which sent the car veering off the road, clipping a utility pole and striking a few trees before wrapping itself around a trunk, Carricarte said.
The accident took place at milepost 34.5, near the intersection of Snow Hill Road.
Cunningham suffered serious head injuries and was airlifted to the Trauma Unit at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, Carricarte said. Her car's airbag deployed, but it was unknown if she was wearing a seat belt.
Alcohol is suspected as a factor in the accident, and police are awaiting the results of a blood test, Carricarte said. The accident remains under investigation, he said.
(Engine 16-3 and Rescue 16-4 responded to the crash while Tanker 16-5 handled the landing zone behind the old State Police Barracks.)
