smoke coming from the rain gutter at the front of the building, said Assistant Chief Ken Badger of the Mays Landing Fire Company. As they pulled open the gutter, fire and heavy smoke poured out.
"Crews had to get inside and pull the ceilings and open the wall from the front," Badger said.
The Laureldale and Cologne Fire Companies also responded to the scene. Main Street was closed from Route 50 to Hudson Street while firefighters battled the blaze.
After the flames were extinguished, firefighters pulled insulation and other materials from the roof and covered it with a white tarp.
The pub burned down once, sometime in the 1970s, and was replaced, Badger said.
The scene was cleared at about 5:45 p.m.
